For this piece I started by creating the doorknob. I used small pieces of clay to create a mouth on the piece. I then created a slab and shaped it into the basic shape of a older door handle. I slowly carved a design into the slab that was more peaceful. I felt that it allowed the mouth of the doorknob to stand out in the piece.
Pros: I like the shape of the teeth in this piece and how like look raised and separate. I also like how the curved detail at the top of the piece rounds out and creates movement. Cons: I miss placed the key hole in the piece and had to find a way to cover it up to create a placement I liked better.

For this piece I started by creating a basic mug. I created small rectangles out of clay to let them slowly harden. I added some to the side of the mug for the look of a ladder. I then continued the ladder through the top of the mug using high fire wire. Once the clay harden some more I carved the look of wood grain into the outside of the mug. My plan for this piece is to represent the fear of heights through the idea of swinging bridges and falling forever.
Pros: The steps up the side of the mug and the bridge steps are well done and give the correct appearance I was hoping for. Cons: I let the piece dry slightly to fast where the bottom of the piece started to crack. For this piece I started by creating the basic parts of the body and head out of clay and carving them out. I slowly started adding arms and legs as the clay was slowly hardening. I then added features to the head to give the appearance of owl. I made sure to smooth out the eyes and give some feather look on the head. I let this slowly dry out making sure that everything held together.
Pros: I like how the head of this piece came out and the angle of which I got the head onto the body. Cons: I did not cover the legs long enough for the piece to dry out at the same rate, leaving the legs weak to which the broke off before it was fired. For this piece I started by creating a small person reaching up for the sky. The plan for this is to put it in a vase full of water and rocks to give the illusion of being stuck under water.
Pros: I like how the human looks like a form and not super realistic. I glazed it a deep black to fit the shadow theme. Cons: I think the arms are very long and do not come close enough to its head. For this piece I started by shaping a piece of clay into an oval shape and slowly formed basic facial features onto the form. Next I worked to cut off half of the piece in a way that looks like it got pulled off. I added a neck for a base and added hair to frame to the head. I then started working on little details and smoothing out features.
Pros: The pros of this piece are the shape of the nose and how it centers the face. I also am proud of how the face looks pulled apart and like it is fading away. Cons: I think the hair on this piece could have been better and more full. I think it shrank more than I expected it to. It left the one side more bare than the other side of the head. |
